Kamalu Rosa has dedicated her life to enjoying the waves outside her home in Waikiki, Hawaii.
As a 43-year-old surf instructor and professional athlete, Kamalu finds nothing more beautiful than helping others discover the sport, despite the possible difficulties!
His passion for surfing began in his childhood, when his father lost a leg in a road accident. Since then, as soon as he sees someone on the beach with physical difficulties, he approaches and offers a free surfing lesson.

“I started slowly, taking in kids who didn’t know how to swim and helping them learn the skill,” he says. “I’m lucky to be able to do this professionally and help people.”
Elias Walker, a friend of Kamalu’s who often photographs these acts of kindness, says Kamalu’s cheerful character inspires people and gives them the confidence to follow his example.
“It’s just his mood and his spirit,” Walker points out. “He always gives 110 percent. He loves what he does.”
One day, by the ocean, Kamalu spotted Stephanie, a woman with cerebral palsy.

Asking her if she wanted to try surfing, he was delighted by her enthusiasm and her loud “yes”! Carrying Stephanie on his shoulders, he led her to her board, and they rode the waves.
Elias captured her first experience in the waves, and the look on his face was proof enough that Stephanie was experiencing one of the brightest moments of her life!
Kamalu caught three separate waves with Stephanie on board, and both were thrilled with the experience. He described it as an “incredible experience” and called it the best lesson of his educational career.
