It took 19 long years, but Monique Pascalidis finally achieved her ultimate dream – becoming a mother.
Monique found herself in the foster care system in Bradenton, Florida, at the age of 11. Most of her childhood was spent in foster homes, where she had the fortune of meeting a very special social worker.
Leah Pascalidis became an integral part of Monique’s life when she was entrusted to her through the nonprofit organization Safe Children Coalition.
They simply “connected,” according to Leah, and worked together for six years as Monique completed her studies. When Monique turned 16, she began calling Leah “mom.”

At that point, Leah already knew she wanted to officially adopt Monique, but her job presented conflicts of interest.
When Monique turned 19 and had to leave the system, she feared starting an independent life without the support of the state and her unofficial adoptive mother.
“It was hard – going from a foster home with an adult helping you to suddenly being alone, without an adult,” explained Monique. “It was lonely.”
One day, while watching a documentary on adult adoption, Leah realized that their relationship with Monique didn’t have to end.

“It was important to me that she knew she was wanted, that she was loved,” said Leah. “I can say it as many times as I want, but actions speak louder than words.”
On that very day, Leah decided to officially adopt Monique, and Monique was thrilled with the idea. Six months later, the court officially legalized their family in an emotional virtual ceremony.
Monique immediately took Leah’s last name and will receive a new birth certificate confirming their permanent family bond.
For Monique, this ceremony was the culmination of her entire life.

“I still can’t really describe how I felt at that moment. It was beyond words. It’s the only thing I’ve always wanted in my life – to have a mom,” said the young woman. “I never expected to be adopted, and here I am. [Leah] never gave up on me.”
With Leah’s support, Monique now works in a children’s center and is pursuing studies in early childhood education. She hopes to honor her opportunity by opening her own home for teenagers.
Soon, she will be able to offer other children the love and support she received from Leah when it was needed most!
Both Leah and Monique hope that by sharing their story, they can inspire more people to adopt teenagers and older children.
