😱 Edward hadn’t been to the cemetery in a long time. Age, leg pain, loneliness… But that morning, he woke up with a different breath. He wanted to visit his son — Michael.
Michael wasn’t his biological child, but he had been the closest person in his life. Edward and his wife couldn’t have children. After years of waiting, they chose to adopt. That’s how a fragile boy with a dim gaze entered their home.
— This is Michael. His mother didn’t want to let him go, then suddenly gave him up. He doesn’t trust anyone, — the caretaker whispered.
At first, the boy was silent, ate without appetite, rode the merry-go-round without smiling. A year later, for the first time, he called Edward “dad” and asked:
— Will you leave me?
— Never, — Edward promised, hugging him. 💔
Michael became their pride: straight-A student, entered military school, then served in dangerous missions. Then came the illness… Discovered too late. The doctors had no hope.
Soon after, his wife passed away. He was left alone. Only Max, the dog, as gray as his owner, remained by his side.
— Let’s go, buddy, let’s visit Michael, — he whispered one morning.
The road to the cemetery was long. At the gates, they saw a stranger. He didn’t greet them — unusual for their village.
At the grave — disorder. Edward sighed. But suddenly, Max growled and began digging by the fence. 🐾
— What did you find there?
A cardboard box emerged from the ground… Dry, fresh — recently placed. No one around. Edward pulled it out and opened it…
😲 A chill ran down his spine when he saw what was inside…

The box was heavier than it looked. Then suddenly… something moved inside. He stepped back, heart racing.
Carefully tearing the cardboard, he saw a tiny body. Beneath old rags lay a newborn girl. She barely moved, opened her mouth, and breathed weakly.
— Oh my God… — he whispered, holding her close.
He ran. Max barked loudly, running beside him like he hadn’t in years. They reached Emma’s house — the village’s former nurse. She immediately took the baby, wrapped her in a warm towel, and got to work.
Half an hour later, an ambulance arrived. Then — the police. Neighbors gathered. Someone handed Edward a heart pill. He trembled silently.
The next day, a man in a fine coat appeared at the gate.
— Are you Edward? I’m Hermann, the baby’s grandfather.
He brought a box of groceries and an envelope.
— This is all I can offer. Because of you, my granddaughter is alive. My daughter died giving birth, and her husband tried to get rid of the child for the inheritance. He’s now under investigation.
Edward nodded. He knew what it meant to lose a family.
Weeks later, he placed new fences on his wife’s and son’s graves. Everything looked proper. He sat on the bench and sighed:
— Now it’s all right, my dear ones… Just like it should be.
That evening, only the dog returned home. In the morning, they found the old man — he had passed quietly, with a smile.
The funeral was paid for by Hermann. Max stayed in the village. When he passed, he was buried beside his owner.
