Recently, a joyful event took place at a Madrid wildlife sanctuary: a panda gave birth to twins. The firstborn cub was born at 8:30 am after 4 hours of contractions.
Experts closely followed the process, ready to intervene, but it was not required: the experienced mother coped with the task on her own.
After the tiny pink lump made its first cries, the panda carefully peeled it off and placed it on its stomach.
The second calf was born in the afternoon. Newborns will be completely dependent on their mother for the first 4 months until they can walk on their own.
The sex of the babies has not yet been determined (this requires waiting for the results of the DNA analysis). Local veterinarians are assisted in caring for rare animals by two specialists from the Chinese panda breeding center in Chengdu.
All conditions are created for pandas at the special sanctuary.
This is especially valuable given how difficult it is for this species to give population not only in captivity but also in the wild.
Giant pandas or bamboo bears become sexually mature between 4-8 years of age. Pregnancy, which lasts 90-160 days, ends with 1 or 2 cubs weighing 90-130 grams.
