The Limpopo River in 2000 caused a stir among the inhabitants of the Republic of South Africa when the waters of this river overflowed during the flood.
Moreover, the banks in several countries underwent flooding, with damage to houses and erosion of land. But apart from real estate, the animals living in the river valley also suffered.
When the river began to return to its banks, the Joubert couple walking along the bank found an exhausted hippopotamus cub at the very edge of the water. And it looks like the hippo was a newborn – since its umbilical cord was still dangling.
The injured baby was taken home by the couple; it turned out to be a female named Jessica.
The spouses did not have children, and they directed all their unspent parental fervor to nurse and raising the hippopotamus … which, by the way, even in its infancy, weighed 15 kilograms!
Jessica grew up quickly, and soon her foster parents had to move her to a pool specially built in the courtyard of the house, from which the little hippo loved to watch what was happening in and around the house.
Although most of the time, the animal continued to live right in the rooms of its owners.
