There are so many animals and birds endangered. Thankfully, there are still some people worried about those species.
Recently, a rescue group of kiwikiu birds heard good news that gave them hope to continue making efforts to save this species.
A bird that was thought to be dead is actually alive.
Kiwikius are critically endangered birds native to Hawaii. There are about 150 kiwikius left in nature.
Some time ago the research group interested in these birds released seven kiwikius into the wild. The purpose was to adapt them to newly-restored forests.
Unfortunately, the plan didn’t work. 5 of 7 birds were found dead due to malaria. The recording number of mosquitos was the reason the birds were exposed to the disease.
Researchers thought the other two also had fallen. But on July 21, an unexpected call of a kiwikiu was heard in the wild.
Zach Pezzillo tells that it was a majestic call from a distance. He followed the song of the bird and finally found it! He was not mistaken – it was one of the 7 kiwikius!
Later it turned out that the bird was also exposed to malaria but somehow he survived.
It was something to celebrate for researchers not only for the bird was alive but also he could overcome malaria.
It has given hope to them that a population of kiwikiu and other native forest birds could survive in restored landscapes in the future.
What great news! This is actually a very incredible story about a bird that sought to live and give generations!
