In wildlife, it’s a great challenge to be a baby. It’s even worse when the elephant calf is an albino. Additionally, she is orphaned.
Yes, all of these happened to one baby elephant named Khanyisa.
But it’s these kinds of stories that make us believe in good and also give us a chance to demonstrate that goodness. It’s often those tiny creatures that strongly need us in the time of danger and threat.
Unfortunately, Khanyisa the calf had a very sorrowful past. She was a 2-month-old calf when her mother was killed due to poachers. But it didn’t weaken this strong and wonderful animal.
She just didn’t give up and survived at the hands of poachers. The calf was dehydrated and weakened when a group of rangers found her and took her to an elephant sanctuary.
Khanyisa had better days to come. In an animal center in Johannesburg, South Africa, the calf received medical help. Soon her wounds recovered and she was able to live a full life.
Finally, Khanyisa knew what is love and care. In the sanctuary, the new herd of her species accepted the calf as one of them. As the director of the sanctuary says, all of the elephants there are rescued and they know what it feels like to be abused.
An elder female took the albino baby under her wing as id Khanyisa is her daughter.
