Werribee Zoo, located in Australia, will receive the money it needs to rebuild and expand its area. The main goal of the funding is to save endemic animals.
The year before last, there were large-scale fires, after which koalas were on the verge of extinction. Taking care of these animals has practically become a national idea.
Baby Joey, that was saved from death by veterinarians, became the symbol of the project.
This is a very sad story. In an attempt to escape from the feral dogs, the koala mother fell from the tree, and little Joey was in her bag.
It was not possible to save the adult animal – she had a lot of injuries. Fortunately, the baby was more successful – only her paw was injured. At that time she was 5 months old. This is the age when babies are just starting to lean out of the bag to explore the world.
The veterinarians quickly cured Joey’s paw. It was much more difficult to feed her. She weighed only 500 g and needed constant nourishment. The zoo staff worked in shifts to get the baby out.
Joey coped with all the difficulties. She was able to recover and get stronger and also learned how to get food herself.
