There are few elephants left in China. The number of Asian elephants in this country decreased to 300. It is the reason that this herd gets the attention of wildlife defenders during their long journey.
The herd consists of 15 members – 3 of them are calves. Moreover, one of the calves was born during the journey.
In the family of 15 elephants, there is only one male. Yet, the male has lately separated from the herd, staying behind 4km.
It’s still unknown why they left their initial habitat. The incredible journey they are in is hard to overcome. 500km is hard to overcome even for humans.
The herd has been escorted by police, 14 drones and 500 personnel. It’s obvious that the local government has put huge efforts to keep the animals safe. They also have to compensate for the damages caused by the giants on their way.
This journey got popular and received positive feedback. But scientists are worried that the elephants move far from the rainforests where they are used to live.
It’s a huge risk of letting them change the place and environment of living. In the future, they will have problems.
For now, the group of ”travelers” continue their way. We hope they will find a better place to inhabit.
